Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour Surpasses $100 Million Mark

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6898192/madonna-rebel-heart-tour-100-million?utm_source=twitter

The diva's total reported touring grosses recently reached $1 billion.

Madonna takes the No. 2 slot on the latest Hot Tours roundup (see list, below) based on January ticket sales reported from her ongoing Rebel Heart Tour that covered North American and European markets during a 15-week span in the fall. The trek resumed on Jan. 6 following a two-and-a-half week break at the end of the year, opening with a two-show engagement at Mexico City’s Sports Palace arena. Sold out shows in seven U.S. cities followed in January along with a two-night stint in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the end of the month.

Altogether during the first month of the year, the pop diva performed for just over 150,000 fans at 12 concerts, adding $19.3 million to her tour’s overall gross that has now topped the $100 million mark. Since the Sept. 9 opening performance in Montreal, the Rebel Heart tour has reached $107.3 million in ticket sales at 61 concerts. A total of 819,792 fans have seen the tour in 14 countries through the end of January.

Above the Queen of Pop at No. 1 on the new Hot Tours list is the Rolling Stones, with $36.9 million in grosses reported from the América Latina Olé tour, the band’s first tour to visit Latin America in a decade. At the opening performance in Santiago at the national stadium of Chile on Feb. 3, the iconic rock group kicked off its ten-city trek with a sellout crowd of 62,412.

The tour’s only three-show run followed on Feb. 7, 10 and 13 in Buenos Aires at the Estadio Único Ciudad de la Plata. With 155,184 tickets sold, the multiple-show stint racked up $17.6 million at the box office, making it 2016’s highest-grossing concert engagement so far. Single performances followed in Montevideo, Uruguay (Feb. 16) and Rio de Janeiro (Feb. 20), and, like the tour opener in Santiago, both topped the 60,000 mark in attendance.

The América Latina Olé tour’s final show was originally set to be in Mexico City on March 17, but the Stones recently announced an additional date, a free concert to be held on March 25 in Havana, Cuba. The outdoor performance will be the band’s first major concert ever held in the Caribbean.

Bruce Springsteen follows with the No. 3 ranking based on $16.3 million in sales at eight North American arenas on his River tour that kicked off in mid-January. Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, the first venue included in this week’s tally, hosted 18,134 fans on Feb. 2. The U.S. cities that followed were Boston, Albany, N.Y., Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta and Louisville, Ky. Attendance at the arenas in all eight markets totaled 135,519.

These three legendary acts are part of a small group of six artists who have topped the $1 billion mark in reported ticket sales since Billboard began tracking concert grosses in the early 1990s. Only six acts have crossed that threshold, based on sales data reported to Boxscore. The Rolling Stones top the list with $1.8 billion in reported revenue since Jan. 1, 1990. Madonna, the only female artist in the mix, lands at No. 3 with $1.24 billion and The Boss is next at $1.23.

Rounding out the billion-dollar group are U2, second with $1.6 billion, Elton John at No. 5 with $1.05 billion and Bon Jovi following with $1.03 billion.

Madonna Extends Record as Highest-Grossing Solo Touring Artist: $1.31 Billion Earned

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7271843/madonna-extends-record-highest-grossing-solo-touring-artist?utm_source=twitter

Her recently completed Rebel Heart Tour earned $170 million & sold more than 1 million tickets.

With the wrap of Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour on March 20 in Sydney, the pop superstar solidifies her status as the highest-grossing solo touring artist in Billboard Boxscore history. Based on Billboard’s Boxscore archives that stretch back to 1990, her overall concert grosses reached $1.31 billion with the tour’s final show.

The Rebel Heart trek grossed $169.8 million from 1,045,479 tickets sold at 82 performances. The tour launched on Sept. 9, 2015, in Montreal, spanned over seven months and visited four continents. It hit 20 arenas in the U.S. and Canada through the end of October. A European run through 16 cities in 11 countries followed in November and December, and a second North American stint began in January. Seven Asian cities were on tap in February, and the tour’s final leg wrapped Down Under with a four-city sweep through Australia and New Zealand.

The Rebel Heart Tour’s top-grossing venue was the Saitama Super Arena in the Tokyo market with $9.6 million earned at sold out shows on Feb. 13 and 14. Top box office counts among the North American markets came at New York City’s Madison Square Garden with $5.2 million in sales on Sept. 16 and 17.

The diva first earned the top solo touring distinction in 2009 after the conclusion of her Sticky & Sweet tour. With the closing of that year-long run she became the highest-grossing solo artist and held that title until Bruce Springsteen surpassed her during his successful Wrecking Ball and High Hopes tours from 2012 through 2014. With the Rebel Heart Tour, however, she takes back the title.

Overall, Madonna ranks third on all-time top-grossing Billboard Boxscore list, with justThe Rolling Stones ($1.84 billion) and U2 ($1.67 billion) ahead of her. Madonna is also one of only six artists -- and the only woman -- who have topped the $1 billion mark in overall concert grosses since 1990.

Top Grossing Billboard Boxscore Touring Acts*

  • [*]The Rolling Stones — $1.84 billion [*]U2 — $1.67 billion [*]Madonna — $1.31 billion [*]Bruce Springsteen — $1.25 billion [*]
Elton John â€” $1.05 billion [*]Bon Jovi â€” $1.03 billion

* through March 23, 2016

Madonna’s first tour reported to Billboard Boxscore was the Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990. She first joined the billion-dollar club in 2012 with the wrap of her MDNA Tour that brought her overall ticket sales total to $1.14 billion.

Also, Madonna has been the highest-grossing female touring artist for the past 12 years. She staked that claim in 2004 with the wrap of her Re-Invention World Tour and has remained the top solo female concert headliner ever since.

Spectacular! Well done all involved. The Rebel Heart tour has been a critical, commercial, and creative success. It's truly remarkable and very well earned. But...Bruce is back on the road again playing arenas across the States and stadiums in Europe. He'll easily crunch $200 million by the end of the year, so enjoy this moment because it won't last long. That said, he's playing the entirety of The River album - originally released in 1980! I can't say I'm a fan, but rehashing an album 3 decades old is hardly the zenith of creativity, is it?Similarly, The Rolling Stones toured their 1971 Sticky Fingers album on last year's Zip Code tour, and only this week I received an email promoting Stevie Wonder in Hyde Park performing 1976's Songs In The Key Of Life' album. Are you freaking kidding me?! Err, no thanks. Did I unknowingly hitch a ride in a time-travelling DeLorean?!Can you imagine Madonna announcing the 'Like A Virgin' tour in 2017? She'd be universally slated! To sustain her career she's expected to remain impossibly youthful, dance her ass off in heels, change costume multiple times, rearrange and re-choreograph her back catalogue, create brand new chart topping hits and raise a family all at the same time. And Heaven forbid she might falter for a moment and miss her son during a custody battle. In short, there's a massive double standard when it comes to women in pop music, so Madonna's achievement is so much more impressive than any of her peers. She's in a class of her own when it comes to creativity, and no one else, in or out of the billion dollar club, can touch her. Queen.

Here Are $1.31 Billion Reasons Why Madonna Truly Is The Material Girl

http://www.forbes.com/sites/melindanewman/2016/03/23/here-are-1-31-billion-reasons-why-madonna-truly-is-the-material-girl/#69e23bcb500d

Madonna may have provoked ire by going on late at several shows or even by pulling down a 17-year old girl’s top on stage, but nothing could keep the Material Girl from bringing the crowds—and the big bucks— to her Rebel Heart tour.

The 55-city world tour came to a close Sunday in Sydney, Australia, grossing nearly $170 million from 82 shows and selling more than 1 million tickets.

That figure brings Madonna’s Billboard Boxscore total tally to $1.31 billion in ticket sales, the most for any solo artist in the chart’s history.  From whom did she snatch the title? Bruce Springsteen, who held the distinction from 2012 to 2014. He overtook Madonna for those three years after she first earned the title in 2009.  With The Boss on tour through the summer–including a European stadium run–—he will likely reclaim the throne by year’s end.

Overall, Madonna is the third highest-grossing artist on the chart behind the Rolling Stones and U2 since tracking began in 1990. Forbes estimated her net worth at $520 million last year. That tally just went up.

Here are the six artists, according to Billboard Boxscore, who have topped $1 billion in overall concert grosses since 1990. It’s interesting to note that all of them were touring for years—if not decades—before tracking started 26 years ago so their actual lifetime tallies are much higher.

Top Grossing Billboard Boxscore Touring Acts (through March 23, 2016)

The Rolling Stones — $1.84 billion

U2 — $1.67 billion

Madonna — $1.31 billion

Bruce Springsteen — $1.25 billion

Elton John— $1.05 billion

Bon Jovi — $1.03 billion

Madonna Leads Hot Tours Roundup With Final Rebel Heart Shows

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7317973/madonna-hot-tours-rebel-heart-shows

With the wrap of her Rebel Heart tour, Madonna owns the No. 1 slot on the weekly tally of top-grossing Hot Tours (see list, below), based on $62.4 million in sales from the final two legs of her four-continent jaunt. A swing through seven Asian markets in February and a final trek in Australia and New Zealand rounded out the world tour that kicked off last fall in North America.

Her highest-grossing venue during the Asian leg was a two-night stand in the Tokyo metropolitan area at the Saitama Super Arena on Feb. 13 & 14. With $9.6 million in ticket sales, the arena also ranked as the highest grossing venue throughout the entire six-month trek. The tour finale, a two-show stint at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on March 19 & 20, generated $6 million in revenue, the top sales among the venues during the final leg Down Under.

Final overall box office counts for the Rebel Heart tour totaled $169,804,336 from 1,045,479 sold tickets at 82 sold out performances worldwide.

Kevin Hart follows in the second slot on the Hot Tours recap based on a sold out engagement in Sydney, also at Allphones Arena. The comedian performed two nights at the venue, selling a total of 27,284 tickets on Feb. 7 and 8. With a $2.2 million box office take, the Sydney engagement was the final date for his What Now? tour’s Aussie leg that also included performances in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane during February.

Hart’s yearlong tour kicked off last April with 129 shows set in U.S. and Canadian markets through the end of 2015. An international leg began in January and included shows in European and Asian cities before heading to Australia. The What Now? tour’s final run was a string of South African dates at the end of March.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Van Morrison scores the No. 3 ranking on Hot Tours with a $1.6 million gross from two sold out concerts in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. A total of 12,318 fans saw the veteran artist during the Jan. 15-16 run.

The L.A. engagement kicked off Morrison’s 2016 touring schedule that also included a three-night sold out stint at Oakland’s Fox Theater beginning on Jan. 18. A handful of European shows followed in March, and a series of U.S. shows are booked in April, including an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 23. Also, a slate of upcoming performances are booked in Europe during the summer months.
