  1. The MTV VMAs air this Sunday, and while we're plenty curious about who will go home with awards for their videos, the show is well known (and dare I say, notorious) for featuring must-see musical performances. The woman who pioneered the edgy VMA performance is Madonna of course, who has always managed to get the country talking when she graces the stage. Here, check out her most memorable performances from VMAs past. 1984 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGeEFl4oRG8 In Madonna's first VMA performance, she kicked off her tradition of shocking the audience by writhing around in a wedding dress while singing "Like a Virgin." 1989 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pehMBaHgpWEThe Material Girl rocked black lace and followed her own advice when she belted out "Express Yourself." 1990 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTaXtWWR16AFor her hit "Vogue," Madonna went full Marie Antoinette with a powdered wig and full skirt — which helped hide some male dancers at one point. 1993 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpOIVR6LQTsMadonna opened the awards ceremony with "Bye Bye Baby" amid a backdrop of "The Girlie Show," the theme of her tour that year. 1998 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAEc-cLroT0 Madonna looked to Eastern spirituality, henna, and a Bindi, for her performance of "Ray of Light." 2003 The only way Madonna could top her first "Like a Virgin" performance was by bringing the song back. She performed it with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera — and memorably kissed both of them. http://www.buzzsugar.com/Madonna-VMA-Performances-18849328

  6. Today, Aug. 16, marks the date that we welcomed the Queen of Pop (happy 56th birthday!) and lost the King of Rock & RollToday marks the date that we welcomed the Queen of Pop and lost the King of Rock & Roll.Madonna was born Aug. 16, 1958. As we celebrate the Material Girl's 56th birthday, we likewise note the 37th anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley, who died on the same date in 1977 at age 42.In honor of two of the most prolific hitmakers in Billboard history, here is a look at some of the chart records that the icons claim. MADONNA38 top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. The Beatles, with 34, rank second. Madonna's first top 10 was 1984's "Borderline," which started a streak of 17 consecutive top 10s through 1989's "Cherish" (No. 2). Her most recent top 10 was 2012's No. 10-peaking "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.Seven Hot 100 No. 1s in the '80s, tying her with Whitney Houston for most among women during the decade. Madonna's total haul of No. 1 Hot 100 hits is 12, placing her fifth for the most leaders all-time. (The Supremes also boast 12 toppers). Only the Beatles (with 20), Mariah Carey (18) and Michael Jackson and Rihanna (13) have earned more No. 1s.Coincidentally, Madonna claimed her fourth No. 1, "Papa Don't Preach," on this date in 1986, her 28th birthday. (Aug. 16 also doubles as the launch date of Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart in 2003, a list that Madonna has led seven times).43 No. 1s on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Essentially, if Madonna releases a single and it charts on Dance Club Songs, it's a safe bet to assume it'll go to No. 1. Madonna is clearly the Queen of the Club. Rihanna ranks second with 22 toppers, followed by Beyonce (21).20 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, the most such sets among all artists dating to her first week in the top tier (Oct. 6, 1984) with her self-titled debut. Of those efforts, eight reached No. 1, including MDNA in 2012. In that nearly 30-year span, the Kidz Bop Kids franchise places second with 19 top 10s, followed by George Strait (18) and Carey (17).Meanwhile, Madonna's influence is reaching the latest generation of divas. "She is strength, she is freedom, she is wisdom beyond anybody’s comprehension," Ariana Grande beams of her top idol in the cover story of the new Billboard Magazine. When suggested that the two should record together, "Oh my God, my heart would stop," she gasps. 7. The Definitive Ranking of Madonna's Top 55 Songs Gay Star News readers get into the groove and have voted for the number one Queen of Pop trackMadonna is 55. Get into the groove with your favorite pop songs. It's Madonna's 56th birthday on Saturday (16 August), and what better time to rank 55 of her best songs? From Madonna to MDNA, the Queen of Pop has given us some of the best music moments in the world.GSN readers were also asked to vote for their favorite track.See what song won your hearts below:55. Give Me All Your Luvin'Let's start off by saying this was not a bad song. None of the songs on this list are bad. But, Superbowl aside, this was a bad choice for a lead single from MDNA. And therefore it deserves to be punished.54. American LifeRapping about soy lattes aside, this had an amazing (original) video.53. Don't Cry For Me Argentina Best film role to date. That's not saying much though.52. Girl Gone WildGaymazing video.51. Causing A CommotionClassic 80s track. But there's not much to it.50. Give It 2 MeMadonna is all about self-empowerment, and this is a great modern song. It might not be to everyone's tastes, though.49. Me Against The MusicInstantly catchy, but oddly a little forgettable.48. Bedtime StoryMadonna at her most daring and experimental, but it doesn't exactly have much replay potential.47. EverybodyHer first single, and it sounds at first listen like a typical song of the decade. But there is something special to it, something that proves there's a Queen of Pop to come.46. Turn Up The RadioLike with Hung Up, that completely reinvented Madonna as a modern dance icon, this MDNA track has the same propulsive energy. And if you weren't the biggest fan of the last album, this deserves another listen.45. Who's That Girl? This might not be the best time Madonna was influenced by Spain (that's coming later), but it certainly wasn't the worst (that was Hard Candy's Spanish Lesson). A little unfairly maligned by some, but this is a great fun song.44. CelebrationApart from the slightly dodgy bridge section, and feeling a little forced, this track has a lot of what people love about Madonna. It instills a sense of nostalgia for her beginnings, but unapologetically looks to her future.43. Nothing Really MattersWith hard-step beats and soaring melody, this is a Ray of Light stand-out.42. SecretSoft, sensual, and very sexy.41. Die Another DayIt may not be the best Bond theme, but it's still far better than people tend to think it is.40. JumpIf you've gone from rural life to the big city, this should be your soundtrack.39. Dress You UpWhen it comes to 80s Madonna, this might be her sexiest song that manages to appeal to both men and women of all sexualities.38. Rescue MeIt's as if Justify My Love and Vogue had a song baby.37. Open Your HeartOne of Madonna's classics, and for a good reason. Music video gets plus points for the gay sailers and for making short hair on women sexy, but gets them taken off again for the pervy teen.36. Drowned World/Substitute For LoveIf you've listened to Madonna's albums, you'll know she likes to ponder on the meaning of fame. This was one of her most personal moments.35. HollywoodFar catchier than most songs on American Life, this takes Drowned World's message and kicks it up several more notches.34. You'll SeeMadonna's been criticized heavily at several points in her career, and this was one ballad that was a quiet but defiant response.33. Love ProfusionIt's not surprising American Life scared some, but what is surpising is how she finished the album campaign. Starting off with literal grenades, and ending with this - something softer, sweeter and easier to swallow.32. The Power Of GoodbyeThis is a serious, mature, heartbreaking song. And it's still a beautiful listen.31. Don't Tell MeLyrics don't make a lot of sense, but that doesn't matter. This is unique, country-electronic pop.30. Take A BowWith soulful, poetic lyrics, this is bittersweet but also stunning.29. True BlueTotally retro, light-hearted and fun.28. Oh FatherMost people know Madonna lost her mom at a young age and know this song is about her dad. But this can also be interpreted as one of her most subtle takes on religion.27. Bad GirlThe album Erotica was all about the pleasure of pain, and many saw this song as somewhat out of character for Madonna. But this is about the pain of pleasure, and deserving of another listen.26. La Isla BonitaAnother classic, but a divisive one. Escapism at its finest.25. SorryWhen you're the Queen of Pop, you have to make sure your songs translate. Thumping beats and a killer melody makes sense in any language.24. Justify My LoveHas the sound of sex ever been done better?23. Crazy For YouSlow dance at prom, anyone?22. 4 MinutesIt might not be the Madonna/Michael Jackson collaboration people wanted. It's a bombastic tune, and easily one of the best duets of her career.21. Burning UpShe started out in a band, and she proved she could still rock with Burning Up.20. Beautiful StrangerEasily better than her James Bond offering, this Austin Powers song is incredibly catchy.19. MusicInstantly embraceable, and one of her best calls to the dance floor. And how often do you hear 'bourgeoisie' in a song?18. Live To TellLooking at Madonna's career, one theme keeps coming up. And that's the keeping and telling of secrets. This is one of her best.17. EroticaDaring, sexy, and unabashed. NSFW.16. FrozenThe production behind this is phenomenal, with soaring strings and breath-taking beats.15. Human NatureReleased when Madonna was being heavily slammed for choosing to be open about this, this is an ultimate middle finger to her critics.14. Lucky StarSongs like Lucky Star are what made the LGBTI community fall in love with Madonna.13. CherishSometimes, all you want from a song is a simple message about love. And this is Cherish, a perfectly constructed, effortless pop song.12. BorderlineMadonna may have done more complicated songs, and experimented more, but Borderline is purer pop finery. With it being Madonna's first song in the US top 10, it made her the star she is today.11. Deeper And DeeperWhy does a fairly obscure song deserve to be number 11 on this list? Not only is it infectious, entrancing and one of her best dance anthems, the lyrics are a metaphor for a boy accepting his homosexuality. This was done a full 20 years before other artists told us we were 'born this way'.The rest of the top 10 were voted for by you. We had a poll going for a few days, and this is what you chose.10. 8. As Madonna turns 56 today (August 16), we take a moment to consider a few of the reasons we love her so much: 56 to be exact…1. She arrived in New York in 1978 with nothing but $35 dollars in her pocket and got dropped off in the middle of Times Square: and she loves to tell that story. #mythologyMadonna Poses Nude 3/42. Within about ten years she had become the Queen of Pop.3. She’s a master of reinvention and the mother of comebacks. One minute she’s a respectable English housewife, the next minute…4. She’s also the mother of Lourdes, Rocco, David and Mercy, making her the world’s coolest single mom. Here they are on one of their more philanthropic outings.5. She’s a woman who knows her flaws as well as her strengths.6. She loves posing for fierce photos.7. …but is fierce when she doesn’t want to pose for photos.8. She knows how to create an iconic look or six.9. She also delivers iconic quotes like this one.10. She absolutely loathes hydrangeas, in case you hadn’t heard.11. She’s got more bangers than Sydney’s fireworks display on New Year’s Eve.12. But she also has amazing underrated ballads like this one.13. She can do this.14. She opened the very first MTV VMAs in 1984 with this raunchy performance of Like A Virgin: the cake was a last minute substitute for a lion that the zoo wouldn’t let her take out on loan.15. Her documentary In Bed With Madonna sets the template for modern popstar films, showing the brassiered one on and off stage on her epic 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour.16. She’s been on the cover of Attitude – naturally – and was amazing, even playing us Hung Up before everyone else got to hear it.17. …just don’t interview her in a hot room, as one of our peers learned the hard way.18. She loves strong women from history, which is good because she shares her name with the mother of Jesus – casually. #iconic 19. She also does a mean Marilyn Monroe impression: as evidenced in the Material Girl video.20. …and again when she performed Sondheim’s Sooner or Later at the Academy Awards in 1991.21. She beat off legends like Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and Meryl Streep to play the title role in the 1996 film adaptation of Evita. Her subsequent snub at the Academy Awards – not even a nomination! – was an injustice from which the world has never really recovered.22. She channelled Marie Antoinette in her 1990 MTV VMA performance of Vogue. *flaps fan*23. She also channelled Cleopatra entering Rome when she performed her epic Super Bowl half-time show in 2012. BECAUSE SHE COULD.24. Just don’t throw water on her stage, motherfucker.25. She loves stirring up a bit of controversy in her music videos. Remember Like A Prayer, in which she makes out with a black saint, gives herself stigmata and tops it off by burning a load of crosses. Her then sponsors at Pepsi weren’t happy, nor was the Pope. (Nor were the crosses).26. She went even further with this bad boy, though: Justify My Love, which is basically a short porn clip with some music in the background, and introduced the world of light bondage and gimps to your mum and dad.27. She made a coffee table sex book called, er, SEX, which was all sorts of filth… AND her career survived AND it remains the world’s most sought-after out of print book. So there you go.28. The accompanying Erotica album is also really underrated: see Deeper and Deeper, Bad Girl and Rain.29. She said “fuck†14 times during an appearance on The David Letterman Show, when she shouldn’t really have said it at all, apparently.30. She’s not a bit sorry about it all either.31. In fact, she kept being provocative and made a politically controversial video for American Life in 2003, which you need to see if you haven’t already.32. One time, she made a great cameo in Will and Grace. #cuttome33. One time, Courtney Love made a great cameo in one of her interviews. #lookatme34. Without her, the world probably wouldn’t know how to vogue. #mine35. We also wouldn’t have the Madonna mic. (Well, we would, but it would have been called something different – like the Janet Jackson mic – and that’s not nearly as catchy, is it?).36. Also, Malawi may never have been raised.37. She sees off pretenders to her throne by snogging the careers out of them.38. Her sugar is raw.39. She was taught everything she knows by her gay dance teacher, her gay brother, and every gay person she ever met at gay clubs. THAT IS FACT. Which is why we have so much in common with her.40. She loves to go to the gym, and so do we.41. She loves her some young hot men, and so do we.42. She’s riddled with guilt, and so are we.43. In fact, she told Parkinson she thinks she’s a gay man trapped in a woman’s body, and he agreed, and so did we.44. She has always showcased gay performers and artists in her work.45. She obviously supports same sex marriage passionately.46. She also stood up to the Russians for their anti-homophobic laws, and faced their ‘wrath’.47. She was given a GLAAD Media Award and turned up to the ceremony dressed as a boy scout in protest against the Boy Scouts of America’s discriminatory policies towards gay people – BECAUSE SHE COULD.48. When asked what she thought of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way she gave us two classic Madonna quotes in one answer.49. Recently she discovered Instagram and it was a gift to mankind.50. She posts iconic things like this on there.51. …and this.Who ever made this has a good sense of humor. I hope my mother is laughing wherever she may be! -Madonna52. …and is generally an unapologetic bitch.53. For example, she was recently uninvited from Anna Wintour’s MET Ball because she wanted to wear this.54. She has a new album coming out – with typically understated song titles – and we couldn’t be more excited. (We’re already in the queue. Digitally, obvs).55. If you remain unconvinced, might we suggest watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s tribute to her? If you remain unconvinced after this, you’re dead to us.56. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADONNA! 11. t was rumoured that Madonna fired Guy Oseary and he was not managing her anymore. We can tell you that it is absolutely untrue! Those rumours were spreading especially after the latest reports of a new Live Nation division for Guy Oseary and him signing to manage Alicia Keys. What we heard leaves no doubt: Guy Oseary is still Madonna’s manager.
